Synopsis

A German journalist seduces his best friend´s girlfriend and flees from the turmoil he caused to the lonely arctic island of Spitsbergen. There he makes friends with the hunter Tore, a giant of a man who raises two orphaned polar bear cubs. As they grow larger, the cubs become more and more dangerous to the village.

The mining-settlement Ny-Alesund is shaken by a series of mysterious explosions and accidents. Starting to investigate, the German finds out that the two hundred year old graves of ancient whalers, whom he keeps visualizing in his restless dreams, have been desecrated by the settlers during the building of a new power station.

In his loneliness, the German yields to the seduction of Tore´s young wife, Torill, and they start the same type of triangle love affair that had made him flee to the island in the first place. There is a dramatic showdown followed by tragedy and death.  The German discovers the mystery of his past as bitter lessons are learned and the settlement is doomed to perish as a result of human hubris and disrespect for the mystical laws of nature.
